Professor Liang Yuan is the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, an expert in the field of coal exploitation and coal and gas governance, the professor and doctoral supervisor of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), China University of Mining and Technology and Anhui University of Science & Technology, the director and vice-general manager of the Huainan Mining Industry (Group) CO.LTD, and the director of the National Engineering Research Center for Coal Gas Control. Professor Yuan has obtained lots of awards and titles such as the first session of the “Youth Science and Technology Award”, “Energy Award” and “National Excellent Scientist” of Sun Yueqi Science and Education Foundation affiliated to the China Foundation for Development of Science and Technology, the Major Technical Achievement Award of Anhui Province in 2006, the “National Distinguished Young/middle-aged Expert” titled by the Ministry of Personnel, the talent with outstanding professional skills in national coal system, and the gainer of the special subsidy offered by the State Council. Professor Yuan has obtained 12 pieces of national invention patents, 6 pieces of the 2nd prize of National Advancement Award of Science and Technology( including 3 pieces ranking the first and 2 pieces ranking the third), 6 pieces of grand prize and 1st prize of the Provincial/Ministerial Advancement Award of Science and Technology( all ranking the first). Besides, Professor Yuan has successfully published over 40 scientific papers (including 9 papers included by the Engineering Index) and 4 monographs, and directed the writing of The Handbook of Chief Coal Mine Engineers.

In 1996, for the worldwide problem of the exploitation for the coal seam group with low permeability and massive gas content, Professor Yuan initiatively raised the technological theory of the pressure relief method in gas drilling, and in 2004, he created the theory and technological system of the pressure relief method in gas drilling and the simultaneous exploitation of coal and gas with no pillar. Professor Yuan also initiatively put forward the technological principals for the design of the coal mine with massive gas content, developed the whole set of technology with independent intellectual property rights, and organized several researches for the control technology of the tunnel surrounding rock of soft coal, successfully solving the safe problem in the exploitation for the coal seam group with low permeability, massive gas content and the complicated geological conditions of Huainan mining areas. Besides, Professor Yuan also directed the constructions of Guqiao and other 5 pairs of national-level demonstration modern coal mine and world-class gas utilization project. Since 2000, the research achievements of Professor Yuan have been promoted and applied to coal industry, bring impressive economic benefits for the society and meanwhile making great contribution to the development of the simultaneous exploitation of coal and gas with low permeability and massive gas content for both China and the entire world.
